Album Review: D. Ferren - Something Like Forever

D. FERREN

Something Like Forever

September 30, 2016

8/10

Heart, crunch, bite, howl, and fuzz. This record is full of all the components of that make for a damn fine Alt-Americana rock record.

We all grew up with uncles (I hope). I always felt that the type of uncle you had was split into one of two camps: uncles who listened to Neil Young, and uncles who don't. I grew up with the former, forever shaping my musical interests in the decades after. The rough grit, guitar fuzz, and the stark and earnest lyricism of his records before the 80's always appealed to some inner catharsis. It hit you just right and you immediately felt like he was just another one of your buddies. For this very reason I fell in love with Wilco in the late 90's and still follow them today. The logical extension of this fondness continued on into the newest record from Fort Wayne rocker D. Ferren Something Like Forever.

It's a record that seems altogether intimate and distant to it's listener. And while it starts right off with the immediately catchy "Goodbye Rain" the tracklist becomes more dedicated to it's sound as it progresses; a singer-songwriter making a rock n' roll record to his roots. Rock fans will find a little bit of everything here from the fuzzy near PacNorthwest sounding "Cards on the Table", to the true-to-it's-core travel song "The Highway is Abandoned" and the straight up Tweedy-esque rocker "Lost". This is a record made by a fan, for fans, with love. Find a rainy night, pop this in the car, and cozy up to some truly wonderful tunes.

Make sure you head out this Saturday to see D. Ferren and the Sad Bastards at their album debut show at The B-Side.
